New guidelines for BWMS testing

Marine Environment Protection Committee approves revisions

The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) has approved a series of revisions to the G8 guidelines on testing ballast water management systems (BWMSs).

According to the revised guidelines, BWMS performance will have to be tested in different water salinities (fresh, brackish, and marine). Another revision introduces changes to the guidelines regarding self-monitoring. It stipulates that, in the future, BWMSs will require systems to monitor, record, and store sufficient data to verify correct operation over more than  a 24-month period.

The revised guidelines are more detailed and prescriptive. Additional topics will be discussed at a future MEPC meeting. For more information—and for the full list of revisions—follow this link: http://bit.ly/2fVMdIG
